Senators Reintroduce the DREAM Act

Washington, D.C. - Today,
Senators Richard Durbin, Harry Reid, and Robert Menendez re-introduced the Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act. Last fall, the DREAM Act passed the House of Representatives, and garnered the support of a majority in the Senate, but was ultimately defeated when the Senate failed to invoke cloture and proceed to debate. The sponsors of the DREAM Act hope to build on last year's momentum and continue to highlight the importance of fully utilizing the talent and potential of thousands of young people who are Americans in every way but their birth certificates.

First introduced in 2001, the DREAM Act would address the plight of young immigrants who have been raised in the U.S. and managed to succeed despite the challenges of being brought here without proper documentation.

The proposal would offer a path to legal status to those who have graduated from high school, stayed out of trouble, and plan to attend college or serve in the U.S. military for at least two years.

Each year, approximately 65,000 undocumented students graduate from high school, many at the top of their classes, but cannot go on to college, join the military, work, or otherwise pursue their dreams.

They belong to the 1.5
generation: immigrants brought to the United States at a young age who were largely raised in this country and therefore share much in common with second-generation Americans. These students are culturally American and fluent in English, growing up here and often having little attachment to their country of birth.

The moral, intellectual and practical rationale for the DREAM Act is overwhelming. The White House supports it. The Departments of Homeland Security (DHS) and Justice, entrusted with enforcing and implementing our immigration laws, support it. The Department of Education and America's academic and faith community support it, as well as state legislators, community groups, and the American public. The DREAM Act is even part of the Department of Defense's 2010-2012 Strategic Plan to assist the military in its recruiting efforts.
Despite broad support for the legislative proposal, the divisive political environment around immigration poses an enormous challenge for the DREAM Act. If Congress fails to act, the Administration can and should take more decisive steps to ensure that the values driving their legislative agenda are reflected in their implementation and interpretation of current law. DHS should ensure that its officers use their prosecutorial discretion to defer the removal of any eligible student caught up in the broken immigration system.

Anti-gay groups plan marriage rally

Matt over at Qnotes has posted a story on the up and coming bigot marriage rally, that is set to take place the 17 of May of 2011.

Return America, a Wallburg, N.C.-based group headed by Dr. Ron Beaty of Davidson County’s Berean Baptist Church, is planning the event. It will be held on Hallifax Mall at the North Carolina Legislative Building on May 17. Attorney and Christian Law Association founder David Gibbs, Jr. is scheduled to speak at the rally.

The Davidson County religious advocacy group will be encouraging congregations across the state to attend.

“We are also asking every individual who believes in traditional Biblical marriage to make May 17th a priority day,” Return America states on its website. “The future of our children and grand children may be determined by the outcome of this Rally.”
The North Carolina Family Policy Council, a state affiliate of the Washington, D.C.-based Family Research Center, is also promoting the event.

Yes this is their first time here. They were here in 2009, March 1st, there was still snow on the ground when many of their supporters were bused in..

I did my parts, 1 as a local photographer covering the rallies, and Yes there was a small counter-protest there. After, I took my photographers 2, I joined my fellow LGBT members in their counter-protest..

I made my photos of this event able to few folks, and Qnotes was one of them, I wrote a few lines about the event, nothing happen.

So there are back in NC, not surprising really, but what is, is that our local equality group and a few national known bloggers still don’t want us to counter-protest. Fine,I suggest holding our very own Marriage Equality Rallies on the same lawn, ever that was stop down. I was told just call, write your local Representative in the NCGA. Please if your Rep is one of the co-signer or a GOP member who support the Anti-marriage bill, then what good will it do????

So its OK for us to Rally to show support for CA, when Prop8 happen, It was OK for us to rally against NOM when they came to town. Yet, We can't rally against a bunch of local bigots from our own state. Our Local LGBT leaders and Community Activists only want us to visit our state Rep in Raleigh, and talk what this anti-marriage bill would do to us.

Where the GOP is in power and trying hardness to return us back the fifties.

I want to know why we can’t have a Marriage Equality Rally, or a Rally to protest this Anti-marriage bill??

Yes we should speak with our elected officials in Raleigh, but if your elected  official is one of the many co-signer of this bill, what good will it do.

Equality NC whom have been leading this fight for the last 7 or 8 years now, is doing a post card campaign which I hope will do a lot of good. If we can gather 30, 000 thousand signatures on paper, guess what 30 thousand people showing up at your place or work would look like.

to me 30 thousand in the flesh live people could do and say a hell of a lot more then just 30 thousand pieces of paper..

"The extreme right-wing, ultra-conservative tea party that has apparently captured the North Carolina Republican Party has gotten so cocky, it now brags in public about its plans to use tactics rooted in racism and political segregation in order to gain and control political power," said Rev. Dr. William J. Barber, II, President of the NC NAACP. Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-N.C.), recently bragged to the Washington media:

 

"It's politically probable that there will be a new minority influence district.  Republicans should pick up three seats under any fair and legal [redistricting] map. That is huge. No other state in the nation would gain as many Republican seats. This would be in a state that Barack Obama won in 2008 and where we have had a Democratic governor since 1992 - the longest such period in the nation. A 9-4 [Republican majority] delegation is pretty good and would attempt to avoid the risk of a bad year for Republicans. Clearly, Reps. Kissell and Miller are serving their final term."

 

"Let us look at the racist implications of McHenry's statement," Rev. Barber said. "When he says 'minority influence district' he means the tea party wants to draw new lines around Black areas, and lump us all into a third segregated voting District. Their aim is to remove progressive black voters out of surrounding areas, where we can create a strong voting majority with the growing number of white and brown progressives to get our anti-racism, anti-poverty agenda passed.  McHenry and the extreme ultra-conservative Tea Party Republicans want to defeat our progressive agenda, and take us back to their good old days.  John Tedesco wants to keep us in our 'neighborhoods.'  Ron Margiotta wants to keep 'the animals' in our 'cages.'  McHenry wants to resegregate our voting districts so the tea party can win 9 out of 13 of North Carolina's congressional seats and pass their regressive agenda.

QList, Best of LGBT Carolina "Eastern NC"not included,

Qnotes's third annual QList, Best of LGBT Carolina — Readers’ Pick for the best of LGBT Carolina’s nightlife, dining, retail, community and more!

That Right Qnotes has intentionally has left Eastern NC out, more to the point, Greenville, NC. Greenville has all the following for the Local Ballot section Yet as you can see the local Ballot is for Charlotte, Raleigh/Triangle,and the Triad (Greensboro area).

Proving once again that the Owner of Qnotes and the Editor truly do believe we are a waste of time and resources..

Email about my opinion of Qnotes

Recently in my other and main email account, beside my sickntired one I receive an email from a now deleted account on yahoo from a person defending Qnotes and Matt. Over my opinion that Eastern NC doesn't matter to those whom work at Qnotes.

Sent this email account is close now I first thought it might be Matt or someone else from Qnotes defending themselves on this matter. I had a friend to a trace for me, by providing him the header info from the email. He told me that email was from yahoo, and that it came from the DC metro area. That it was also from a public wifi service.

For those few whom have read my opinion about Qnotes already know what I'm talking about. Those, whom don't let me tell you what it is all about.

North Carolina LGBT community back in the 90's had three LGBT papers, two being Qnotes, and the FrontPage, for some reason I can't remember the third to save my life. Then in 2000 Qnotes and FrontPage merged. Since the merge I personally fell that Qnotes has chosen to cut Eastern NC from the Community.

Now back the email, the emailer told me that they have cover events and other items in the East many times. Ok, it is them they have many times in 2008, this is how I know this, and simply put I downloaded every pdf edition of the paper for that year. Yes events from the East do show up a lot. Like, them asking the community to help support a local Greenville business that is great ally of our. They also listed events for a Bulling Town hall meeting, Aids events and a few report of hate crimes as well.

Qnotes did do the Eastern NC a great in their July 25th, 2009 issue, for new comers to the area. Qnotes list our local organizations, for Aids, faith, and nightlife. Sadly this was the last fully item on the East they did.

When the housing market fell, Qnotes did a great piece that is if you lived in Charlotte, Raleigh or Greensboro. No one in the office could be bother picking up the phone, or faxing, or emailing any Real Estate offices in the Eastern NC to see how bad we were hit in this crisis. Nor were we good enough to be mention in there March 20th 2010 edition as well concern the gay census, true no one city/town in the East has the number seen in Charlotte, Raleigh, Durham, Greensboro or Winston-Salam. I went to Gaydemograhics, and counted those counties in East and as a whole we are just as large as Raleigh in numbers. Then again that piece was solely aim at Charlotte like so many pieces in each edition of Qnotes. That is why I comment that they should Change their name back to Queen City Notes that way one will know that Charlotte is all that matter, all others don't.

We are in there latest edition simply because of the OBX first ever LGBT Pride event. They know, they can't ignore this event. If they did it would prove that they simply don't care about us here in Eastern NC. However they didn't list it as Eastern, no they listed as Coastal I wonder why?? That little piece which is more like an ad then again else was done by Lainey Millen, LM has my thanks.
